Security - back up your data to the cloud

Think about it!  A malevolent virus taking over your machine, a major hard drive failure, a simple security lapse on your part or even theft can deprive you of access to all the information on your computer.  Just imagine what a security nightmare that would be!

Thankfully it doesn't happen every day but to some unlucky people it might be happening right now and it causes real loss.  What information would be hard if not impossible to replace?  Your personal data, your work information, your financial details, your music, your photos and so on.  You could even lose the backups you have made to your machine!  Fortunately, there's an easy way to back up all this information that you will hear a lot more of - it's called The Cloud.

The cloud is a backup of your data that you put somewhere outside your machine and even outside your house.  In fact, you put your data on a server that exists on the internet and which server is, itself, backed up to other servers on the web so that both backups exist in the cloud.

It's a great idea, you do a full backup and then, if the worst happens, you just download it

It's a great idea, you do a full backup (which can take a long time to upload) and then if the worst happens you can download the backup (it's quicker to download) and simply reinstall it either on a new machine or on your old one once it's back in service.  You let the web look after your data and you know that, unless the internet crashes, your data is safe and the internet is not going to crash any time soon, it was build to be uncrashable!

Do a search for 'online storage' to find a whole host of both free and paid-for services for your data.  As this is a security issue, our advice is to choose wisely and remember that, as in life, you probably get what you pay for.  Of course, there's nothing to prevent you taking more than one backup solution of your data for that belt and braces feeling!

Once you've decided on the solution, take the time to read the information or help pages to get up to speed on how you back up your system.  Remember, this is an important step and if the worst happens you want to make sure that the backup you created will work.

Backing up your machine has long been advocated but, in truth, so many people don't bother.  Our advice, with the threats to your data increasing, is to act on this article and find some online storage and then backup your data to the cloud!
