1. Use a credit card to get more protection (not a debit or store card) and try to have one card for just online purchases - it's easier to keep track that way.
2. If you create an account, use a strong and proper password and make sure you can remember it. Also, don't use the same password for every shop and change passwords often.
3. Make sure you know what personal details you share and what third party companies have (or will have) access to them. Generally, the less information you give the better.
3. Print your receipt, order and any other important documents and keep them totally safe - never just save them to your computer's hard disk.
4. Know you rights. Go to www.consumerdirect.gov.uk and spend time reading through the content - it's worth it!
5. Don't ever send credit card details by email and never disclose your pin.
6. If you buy outside the EU double check the supplier and make sure you know what duty you may have to pay and what the delivery cost will be.
7. Don't buy from sites that have PO Box addresses only, try for a store that physically exists or that has proper addresses and contact numbers.
8. We know its boring, but check terms and conditions and know your delivery dates and delivery method.
9. Check all product details (even the small print) and illustrations to make sure you know exactly what you are buying - don't make assumptions.
10. Use an up-to-date, mainstream browser with all the latest security features and ensure that both your computer and your antivirus and antispyware are fully up-to-date.
11. If you're asked to disclose information or complete surveys make sure you know exactly what the information is for and how it will be used.
12. Make 100% sure the payment method is safe and uses the latest secure encrypted technologies to pass credit card details - never skimp on this!
13. Take your time, don't rush to purchase and hope it will be all right.
14. If others use your computer, always delete the browser's cache after use.
15. Lastly, before you press the buy button think: “Am I sure this is safe?”
